This popular reading series is taught by Dr. Winifred Hughes Spar, Ph.D., a former English literature professor at Princeton University. She is the author of a scholarly book published by Princeton University Press and her more recent, Frost Flowers, published by Finishing Line Press. Her poems, many on the subject of nature, have appeared in Poetry Magazine and other journals. She has been the recipient of two Individual Artist Fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
This upcoming course will examine what is happening to nature writing under the inescapable pressures of climate change and environmental crisis. We will explore our evolving human relationship with the natural world through the eyes of contemporary poets. Discover eco-poetry and eco-criticism, tracing the movement from mid-20th century awakenings to current issues of environmental justice, biocentrism, and “the end of nature.”
Each week we will read and discuss selections from the work of such authors as Gary Snyder, Joy Harjo, Camille Dungy, Tommy Pico, and more.
