SUMMARY:Go Wild! How to Certify Your Backyard as Wildlife Habitat
DESCRIPTION:AUDUBON SENIOR CENTER | 239 OAKLAND AVENUE\, AUDUBON\, NJ \nGUEST SPEAKER: Stephen Coan (Award winning landscape consultant) \nCertified Backyard Wildlife Habitat\nThe National Wildlife Federation is offering the opportunity to designate your backyard as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. Becoming a Certified Wildlife Habitat sounds quite official and complicated\, but it’s actually pretty simple. Join Sustainable Audubon and The Oaklyn Green Team on March 4th for this free event (ALL ARE WELCOME) as we discuss how to certify your backyard as a wildlife habitat using native plants\, water\, shelter\, and sustainable practices. \n\n\nCreating a wildlife habitat garden to attract birds\, butterflies\, and other neighborhood wildlife is fun\, rewarding\, and makes a big difference. It’s easier than you might think. Here is what you’ll learn how to include in your garden: \nFood: Native plants provide food eaten by a variety of wildlife. Feeders can supplement natural food sources. \nWater: All animals need water to survive\, and some need it for bathing or breeding as well. \nCover: Wildlife need places to take shelter from bad weather and places to hide from predators or hunt for prey. \nPlaces to Raise Young: Wildlife need resources to reproduce\, and to protect and nourish their young. \nSustainable Practices: Maintain your yard or garden in natural ways to ensure soil\, air\, and water stay healthy and clean. \n\nFor details or questions\, contact: Sustainable Audubon or Oaklyn Green Team

SUMMARY:The Challenges of Energy Sustainability at the Local\, National and Global Levels
DESCRIPTION:James Spalding served as the Paraguayan General Director (2013-2018) of ITAIPU Binacional\, the world leader in both accumulated hydroelectric energy generation (over 2.4 billion MWh) and annual energy generation\, having reached 103\,098\,366 MWh in 2016. ITAIPU Binacional\, located on the Paraná River\, is jointly owned by Paraguay and Brazil\, through ANDE and ELETROBRAS respectively and with an installed capacity of 14\,000 MW\, is the second largest hydroelectric dam in the world. \nThis lecture addresses critical issues of global magnitude\, as the issue of transformative technology continues to be at the forefront of global discussions about the future of sustainable energy in the world. There is no more important contributor to the health and well-being of people than the supply of energy. \nJames Spalding will speak followed by a Q&A session. \nEvent is free. Seating is limited. \nContact: Claudia Sepulveda\, MPA (856) 225-6680 claudia.ebs@rutgers.edu

SUMMARY:Stop the PennEast Pipeline - DRBC Commissioners Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Delaware River Basin Commission has been sitting on an open permit application from the PennEast pipeline for over three years. The public has proven that the information included in the PennEast application is false\, misleading and deficient.  It is time for the DRBC to reject the project and close the file. \nDRBC taking strong action on PennEast is more important than ever as the Trump administration’s works to rollback the rights of states to review and reject pipelines and the ravages of climate change\, largely due to the oil and gas industry\, are reaching a tipping point. \nWe need you to sign the petition\, and if you lead an organization to also sign the organization letter\, to urge DRBC to act. \nAnd we need you to please plan to join us on December 11 at the DRBC Commissioners meeting – 10 am in Washington Crossing\, PA – to make clear to the DRBC and the governors of the 4 watershed states that we demand a rejection of the PennEast pipeline now\, today\, because there is no way to justify keeping their false and deficient permit application open any longer\, and because the science is clear that if this project were allowed to advance it would have devastating consequences for our river\, region\, communities\, nation and world! \nMore information. \n\nAfter taking action\, please help spread the word by forwarding this action using the link here.

SUMMARY:Eco-Poetry Slam
DESCRIPTION:Calling all aspiring poets\, song writers\, and other folks who want to express their feeling on Climate Change and the environment through their artistic voice: The Borough of Oaklyn Green Team will be hosting our next Eco-Poetry Slam on Wednesday\, December 4th at Common Grounds (7 PM). The Master of Ceremonies for this fun evening will be the Green Team’s own Rachel Brody. (After-Party at Tonewood Brewery). REGISTRATION: http://oaklyngreen.org/ecopoetryslam.html \n  \nBackground: Ecopoetry focuses on humanity’s relationship with the natural world in such a way that implies responsibility and engagement. An ecopoem needs to be about a non-human natural world\, wholly or in part\, in some way or the other. Within environmental poetry\, ecopoetry explores nature and its relationship with humans with the ecopoets treating nature as “a separate and equal other.” Ecopoetry is also about the desire for creating change – it is urgent\, it aims to unsettle. It has a desire to issue a “warning” of some kind.

SUMMARY:Movie Screening 'Sustainable'
DESCRIPTION:Come see a free movie of the film Sustainable \nAt Eilandarts Center is located in the newly-restored Station Coffee building in historic Merchantville\, NJ. With more than 3\,000 square feet\, Eilandarts Center features a naturally lit gallery space\, three dedicated music rooms\, and a fully-stocked arts and crafts center including sewing machines\, book-binding\, and ceramics supplies. \n \nA vital investigation of the economic and environmental instability of America’s food system\, from the agricultural issues we face — soil loss\, water depletion\, climate change\, pesticide use — to the community of leaders who are determined to fix it. Sustainable is a film about the land\, the people who work it and what must be done to sustain it for future generations. \nThe narrative of the film focuses on Marty Travis\, a seventh-generation farmer in central Illinois who watched his land and community fall victim to the pressures of big agribusiness. Determined to create a proud legacy for his son\, Marty transforms his profitless wasteland and pioneers the sustainable food movement in Chicago. \nSustainable travels the country seeking leadership and wisdom from some of the most forward thinking farmers like Bill Niman\, Klaas Martens and John Kempf – heroes who challenge the ethical decisions behind industrial agriculture. It is a story of hope and transformation\, about passion for the land and a promise that it can be restored to once again sustain us.
