SUMMARY:The Sacrifice Zone - Online Film Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:LIFE IN AN INDUSTRIAL WASTELAND \nIf you travel down a one-mile stretch of Doremus Avenue in Newark\, NJ\, you pass a natural gas plant next to a sewage treatment facility next to an animal fat rendering plant next to a series of ominous looking chemical storage containers behind acres of fencing. Airplanes pass overhead every two minutes\, their engines rattling windows\, while a putrid smell wafts from the open pools at the sewage treatment plant. \nThis stretch is known as Chemical Corridor\, and it’s located just down the road from schools and apartment buildings. It borders the Ironbound neighborhood\, where Portuguese\, Brazilian\, Central American and African American residents are separated from toxic substances by little more than a railroad track. \nThe Ironbound district of Newark\, New Jersey\, is one of the most toxic neighborhoods in the country. Maria Lopez-Nuñez\, a Honduran-American resident there\, is waging a war for environmental justice. She is part of the Ironbound Community Corporation\, one of the most effective environmental justice organizations in the country. The Sacrifice Zone follows Maria as she leads a group of environmental justice fighters determined to break the cycle of poor communities of color serving as dumping grounds for our consumer society. \n\nMore Film Details\n

SUMMARY:Outdoor Movie - "Pine Mud"
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a socially-distanced movie under the stars at the Collingswood Grand Ballroom and Scottish Rite on Sunday\, October 11 from 6:30 – 8:30pm. Brought to you by Hundred Year Films\, award-winning filmmaker Jared Flesher’s fourth feature documentary explores the controversial topic of off-road vehicle damage on public land. \nWith a screentime of about 60 minutes\, Pine Mud focuses on the vast Pinelands National Reserve of southern New Jersey\, a natural resource enjoyed by photographers\, hikers\, paddlers\, and birders from around the country. Like in many wild places\, “off-roading” has grown more popular here\, with powerful vehicles trampling protected sand dunes and driving circles through ancient ponds. While some of the off-roading activity is perfectly legal\, provided it stays on established trails\, noncompliance with the rules is widespread. As a gritty local conservationist works to protect habitat for threatened species\, tensions flare with off-roading enthusiasts who fear their access to the forest will be restricted. For a deeper dive into these issues\, Jared will be holding a 30-minute Q&A session after the film. \nRegistration is required for this event\, with a minimal ticket fee and a request to bring your own seat. The outdoor space that will host attendees is large enough to accommodate social distancing\, but event organizers ask that tickets for groups are purchased together. Masks will be required for entrance and may be removed when seated in your designated area. For more information and to purchase tickets\, register here.   BYOC (Bring your own chair) \nSponsored by Sustainable South Jersey\, Sustainable Collingswood\, and Hundred Year Films.

SUMMARY:Unbroken Ground - Online Film
DESCRIPTION:Online film showing of ‘Unbroken Ground‘ by Chris Malloy. \nFollowed by a discussion with Jackie Ricotta. \nOur food choices are deeply connected to climate change. Unbroken Ground explains the critical role food will play in the next frontier of our efforts to solve the environmental crisis.  This film explores four areas of agriculture that aim to change our relationship to the land and oceans. Most of our food is produced using methods that reduce biodiversity\, decimate soil and contribute to climate change. We believe our food can and should be a part of the solution to the environmental crisis – grown\, harvested and produced in ways that restore our land\, water and wildlife. The film tells the story of four groups that are pioneers in the fields of regenerative agriculture\, regenerative grazing\, diversified crop development and restorative fishing. \nTo join the event (via Google Hangout)\, please send email to HammontonGreenEvents@Gmail.com \nPlease RSVP by May 5\, 2020 at 5pm and you will receive a link to the event. \nThis is the first virtual event of the 2020 eye opening film and lecture series.
