DESCRIPTION:Bio(gas)hazards: Dirty Air\, Factory Farms and Climate Change\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOil and gas companies are teaming up with factory farms to sell us a greenwashed nightmare: manure as renewable energy.\n\nManure-to-energy\, or “biogas\,” uses manure from factory farms to create natural gas. It entrenches factory farms by creating a market for the huge volumes of manure they produce. Investing in the massive infrastructure needed to produce biogas wastes critical resources that should be used to shift us toward real renewable energy. It will disproportionately impact communities of color. And it won’t address our climate crisis or our factory farm problem.

Learn about the island’s industrial past and its transformation to a wildlife sanctuary as we hike along the Delaware River looking for spring migrants. The varied habitats allow for opportunities to see a variety of birds (and other wildlife too!). Bring an adult along and enjoy this rare opportunity. \nChildren MUST be 12 and older (or 11 in grade 6) to participate and accompanied by an adult or in a group with an adult to child ratio of 1:7. Each child must have a waiver signed by their parent or guardian. All adult chaperones must also have a signed waiver to participate. Registration is REQUIRED for this event; space is limited. Beginning on September 2\, 2018\, Julia wore the same fair trade\, hemp dress to work for 100 days to make a statement about what she calls our “culture of excess”. The project has been chronicled on Instagram\, and has gained international attention from eco activists\, fellow educators\, and slow fashion enthusiasts. Julia will present on her goals within the project\, community reactions\, myths and facts around recycling and donating clothing\, mindful consumption\, and dealing with “celebrity” status.

Access to the island is limited\, so don’t miss this opportunity to see the island and help in its transformation. We will be doing a cleanup of the shoreline where marine debris threatens the health of wildlife and humans. Children MUST be 12 and older to participate.
