SUMMARY:Volunteer – Tree Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to a grant from The Watershed Institute’s Roots For Rivers Program\, hundreds of trees were planted on the farm at PPA earlier this year. The trees help manage stormwater\, reduce erosion\, and reduce flooding in Vincentown and the Rancocas Creek. They will provide long-term benefits to the farm by providing shade\, windbreak\, and pollinator habitat. \nTo help the trees thrive\, we are mulching the trees with pizza boxes and woodchips. The pizza boxes reduce weeds and add soil carbon while reducing our waste stream. There’s a lot of ground to cover\, and we need your help! \nTools will be provided and a bathroom will be available. Participation is limited to 25. By registering\, participants agree to wear a mask over their nose and mouth when within 10 feet of others not in their household. While there will be some gloves available\, please bring your own\, if possible. Thank you so much for your help! \nRegistration required.

SUMMARY:Superfund at 40: The Future of Superfund: Has the Mission Expanded\, and Will It Be Permanent?
DESCRIPTION: On December 11\, 1980\, President Jimmy Carter signed into law the Comprehensive Environmental Response\, Compensation\, and Liability Act\, aka “Superfund.” Forty years later\, Superfund cleanups continue in full stride across the country. \nTo commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Superfund program\, the Environmental Law Institute and Beveridge & Diamond are organizing two in-depth panel discussions of the past\, present\, and future of the Superfund program. The first panel examined the 1986 Superfund amendments\, reform efforts\, and the current status of CERCLA. On December 8\, join us for the second panel in this series\, where former and current senior EPA officials will discuss what parties should expect in the coming decades in terms of CERCLA’s longevity\, its priorities\, and ongoing major conflicts over its implementation \nFor more information & to register by Dec 4th \nYou can also find Part 1 information here \n  \nPresented by the Environmental Law Institute and Beveridge & Diamond PC

SUMMARY:Revolutionizing Ocean Data to Mitigate Climate Change\, Overfishing & Pollution
DESCRIPTION:Ocean management is often undermined by a lack of data on human activity and on the waters themselves. Pirate fishers plunder the high seas with impunity\, knowing they cannot be traced. Crew members on legitimate fishing boats are tortured and even murdered\, out of sight. Stocks are overfished because most quotas are set only annually\, using last year’s data. New technology platforms are beginning to change this. Data from satellites\, autonomous underwater vehicles\, and other platforms are coming together with emerging data streams from social media\, smartphones\, and low-cost distributed sensors to create a ‘data tsunami’. More data were collected on the oceans in 2018 alone than in the entire twentieth century. Ocean data management has not kept pace with this precipitous growth\, however\, and limits our ability to use this new ocean data to address ocean threats. In this webinar\, we will present ways we need to revolutionize the collection\, sharing\, and accessibility of ocean data to address climate change\, overfishing\, and pollution. \nCo-sponsors: OCTO (EBM Tools Network\, The Skimmer\, OpenChannels\, MPA News\, MarineDebris.info)

SUMMARY:Outdoor Movie - "Pine Mud"
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a socially-distanced movie under the stars at the Collingswood Grand Ballroom and Scottish Rite on Sunday\, October 11 from 6:30 – 8:30pm. Brought to you by Hundred Year Films\, award-winning filmmaker Jared Flesher’s fourth feature documentary explores the controversial topic of off-road vehicle damage on public land. \nWith a screentime of about 60 minutes\, Pine Mud focuses on the vast Pinelands National Reserve of southern New Jersey\, a natural resource enjoyed by photographers\, hikers\, paddlers\, and birders from around the country. Like in many wild places\, “off-roading” has grown more popular here\, with powerful vehicles trampling protected sand dunes and driving circles through ancient ponds. While some of the off-roading activity is perfectly legal\, provided it stays on established trails\, noncompliance with the rules is widespread. As a gritty local conservationist works to protect habitat for threatened species\, tensions flare with off-roading enthusiasts who fear their access to the forest will be restricted. For a deeper dive into these issues\, Jared will be holding a 30-minute Q&A session after the film. \nRegistration is required for this event\, with a minimal ticket fee and a request to bring your own seat. The outdoor space that will host attendees is large enough to accommodate social distancing\, but event organizers ask that tickets for groups are purchased together. Masks will be required for entrance and may be removed when seated in your designated area. For more information and to purchase tickets\, register here.   BYOC (Bring your own chair) \nSponsored by Sustainable South Jersey\, Sustainable Collingswood\, and Hundred Year Films.
