SUMMARY:We Must Change Our View of Forests
DESCRIPTION:We can’t see the woods for the trees: To save biodiversity we must change our views on forests \nDan Duran of Rowan University has a provocative take on a conservation issue that has generated arguments throughout the state — and beyond. \nConservationists and others have led most of us to treasure older forests more than other ecosystems. Open-field habitats and young forests\, however\, hold significantly more biodiversity than closed-canopy forests. Those younger forests are often under-valued and less protected. Dan will sketch some of the differences in these habitats\, give us an overview of the conservation issues\, and discuss ways that listeners can get involved in helping to create and maintain early successional forest and “edge” habitats. \nThe meeting and presentation will be in a “live speaker”/Power Point format. The Chat Box will be open for your questions and comments throughout the presentation\, and a Q&A of selected questions will follow the main presentation. We expect this virtual meeting will last 60-75 minutes or so. \nRegister in advance for this webinar: \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar

SUMMARY:The Sacrifice Zone - Online Film Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:LIFE IN AN INDUSTRIAL WASTELAND \nIf you travel down a one-mile stretch of Doremus Avenue in Newark\, NJ\, you pass a natural gas plant next to a sewage treatment facility next to an animal fat rendering plant next to a series of ominous looking chemical storage containers behind acres of fencing. Airplanes pass overhead every two minutes\, their engines rattling windows\, while a putrid smell wafts from the open pools at the sewage treatment plant. \nThis stretch is known as Chemical Corridor\, and it’s located just down the road from schools and apartment buildings. It borders the Ironbound neighborhood\, where Portuguese\, Brazilian\, Central American and African American residents are separated from toxic substances by little more than a railroad track. \nThe Ironbound district of Newark\, New Jersey\, is one of the most toxic neighborhoods in the country. Maria Lopez-Nuñez\, a Honduran-American resident there\, is waging a war for environmental justice. She is part of the Ironbound Community Corporation\, one of the most effective environmental justice organizations in the country. The Sacrifice Zone follows Maria as she leads a group of environmental justice fighters determined to break the cycle of poor communities of color serving as dumping grounds for our consumer society. \n\nMore Film Details\n

SUMMARY:MIT: Sustainability Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Toward a Sustainable Future\nSecuring a sustainable future for humankind depends on rapid\, far-reaching efforts to slow climate change and mitigate its harsh impacts. For decades\, MIT students\, researchers\, and faculty members have pioneered the scientific understanding of climate change and helped advance technological responses\, from alternative energy to batteries to fusion. As we accelerate this work—and as the climate crisis highlights and intensifies social inequities around the globe—MIT is also pursuing inclusive dialogue and a broad array of policy innovations to help drive action\, at scale and in time to make a difference. \nRegister today and join us online on Tuesday\, March 16\, to hear insights from Institute leaders\, faculty\, alumni\, and students who are mobilizing to understand and address these challenges and pursue a healthy future for our planet and for humanity. \nFollowing the main session\, you will be able to choose from a variety of concurrent\, interactive breakout sessions. There\, MIT faculty\, staff\, alumni\, and students will share research highlights and news from across the Institute.
