SUMMARY:Outdoor Movie - "Pine Mud"
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a socially-distanced movie under the stars at the Collingswood Grand Ballroom and Scottish Rite on Sunday\, October 11 from 6:30 – 8:30pm. Brought to you by Hundred Year Films\, award-winning filmmaker Jared Flesher’s fourth feature documentary explores the controversial topic of off-road vehicle damage on public land. \nWith a screentime of about 60 minutes\, Pine Mud focuses on the vast Pinelands National Reserve of southern New Jersey\, a natural resource enjoyed by photographers\, hikers\, paddlers\, and birders from around the country. Like in many wild places\, “off-roading” has grown more popular here\, with powerful vehicles trampling protected sand dunes and driving circles through ancient ponds. While some of the off-roading activity is perfectly legal\, provided it stays on established trails\, noncompliance with the rules is widespread. As a gritty local conservationist works to protect habitat for threatened species\, tensions flare with off-roading enthusiasts who fear their access to the forest will be restricted. For a deeper dive into these issues\, Jared will be holding a 30-minute Q&A session after the film. \nRegistration is required for this event\, with a minimal ticket fee and a request to bring your own seat. The outdoor space that will host attendees is large enough to accommodate social distancing\, but event organizers ask that tickets for groups are purchased together. Masks will be required for entrance and may be removed when seated in your designated area. For more information and to purchase tickets\, register here.   BYOC (Bring your own chair) \nSponsored by Sustainable South Jersey\, Sustainable Collingswood\, and Hundred Year Films.

SUMMARY:Meeting Bee's Needs
DESCRIPTION:Do you know what bees need and how to help them?\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nNearly 3/4 of all plant species in temperate biomes and 94% in tropical areas are serviced by animal pollinators\, a majority of which are bees. Bees are also the most important animal pollinators of agricultural crops. Dr. Kim Russell\, pollinator ecologist and conservationist from Rutgers University\, will discuss the natural history of wild bees including what aspects of their biology makes them such good pollinators\, identify threats they currently face and discuss what we can do to ensure their conservation. \nThis webinar is being offered ONLINE through Zoom. SUMMARY:Monarch Butterflies: Past\, Present\, & Future
DESCRIPTION:The monarchs’ history is lengthy\, and details are few\, but it’s clear that this species has survived an extremely variable climatic history.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nThe pending petition before the Department of Interior to declare the monarch butterfly a threatened species requires that we do everything we can to understand the population dynamics of this species. \nThe responses of monarchs to weather events in the last two decades provide insights as to both the size of past and future monarch populations. This population dynamic has played out against a background of human driven changes in habitats across the landscapes of eastern North America and Mexico. Unfortunately\, landscapes that support monarchs are continuing to decline rapidly as a result of agricultural practices\, development and warming climates. These changes not only involve the loss of milkweeds and nectar sources needed to sustain reproduction and migration but extend to the persistence of the forests in Mexico that sustain the overwintering population. Will the monarch migration become a victim of climate change? Probably. Can we keep this from happening? Yes. \nSpeaker Bio: Chip Taylor is the Founder and Director of Monarch Watch\, and an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas. Trained as an insect ecologist at the University of Connecticut\, his research projects have included studies of reproductive isolating mechanisms in sulfur butterflies\, reproductive and life history patterns in plants\, comparative biology of European and Neotropical African honey bees and migratory behavior of monarch butterflies. In 1974\, Chip Taylor established research sites and directed students studying Neotropical African honey bees (killer bees) in French Guiana\, Venezuela\, and Mexico. In 1992\, Taylor founded Monarch Watch\, an outreach program focused on education\, research and conservation relative to monarch butterflies. Since then\, Monarch Watch has enlisted the help of volunteers to tag monarchs during the fall migration. Over 2 million monarchs have been tagged by volunteers since 1992. Of these\, over nineteen thousand have been recovered. This program has provided many new insights about the dynamics of the fall monarch migration. \nThis webinar is being offered ONLINE through Zoom. SUMMARY:Where does all the water go?
DESCRIPTION:Did you know unmanaged stormwater is responsible for about 60% of pollutants entering our streams\, rivers\, lakes and reservoirs? That’s because when it rains\, chemicals and other dangerous pollutants on our streets\, parking lots\, and roads get washed into storm drains which drain directly into our waterways. This contamination can put restrictions on recreation and spoil drinking water. \n\n\n\n\nUnmanaged stormwater poses a serious threat to our public health. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo understand this issue better and explore solutions\, join the NJ Flood Defense partners for this educational webinar. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured speakers include: \n\nDr. Meiyin Wu\, Director of New Jersey Center for Water Science and Technology and Professor of Biology at Montclair State University\n\n\nSusan Rosenwinkel\, Bureau Chief\, Surface Water Permitting with the NJDEP
